Buying a new laptop? We’re sure you’d have a lot of concerns in mind. What brands should I trust? What’s the difference between a netbook and a laptop? What components do I look for? If you’ve decided on the first two questions but got stuck with the third, we can help. We highly recommend you look for these features in your next laptop to be sure you’re getting only the best:
Full HD Screen Many of us grew up with laptop computers that came with grainy, ill-fitted, and poor screen resolutions, but times are changing. Nowadays, you can easily find a decent 1920×1080 or even higher resolutions on affordable models. We’ve even seen the likes of Acer Aspire E 15 come with a full HD screen at a fraction of the price you’d pay for a Macbook.
Got a little more cash to spare? Give laptops with 4K, ultra-HD (with a ridiculous 3840×2160 resolution) displays a try.
Nvidia Pascal GPU Perhaps, you’d want to play video games on your spare time. In that case, look for gaming rigs that carry a Nvidia Pascal chip.
Be on the lookout for a Nvidia GTX 1080 or a GTX 1050 chips as they’ll allow you to play AAA games at desktop-class frame rates with the settings turned up. Keep in mind that even the least powerful Pascal GPUs on the market today can easily handle high-end VR applications.
Trust us—these laptops are an absolute beast compared to that high-end, three or four-year-old gaming notebook you own.
8GB+ RAM We’re lucky we live in a time when 8GB RAM has become a standard on most laptops. Even models with 16GB RAM aren’t lavishly priced either. With that much RAM, you can multi-task better. Imagine opening a dozen tabs on a web browser and playing a video game on the side, all while you’re loading up a movie. We bet you can’t do all these on a 4GB RAM (or less) system without noticing significant lags.
USB Type-C Ports It may be hard parting ways with laptops having the ever-present USB type-A ports, but there are many reasons why it wouldn’t be such a bad breakup.
To begin with, many of the latest models often come with USB type-C ports and they offer a whole new world of functionality. This connector type can carry data and electricity over a single wire so you can charge your notebook and transfer files all at the same time. You can even use it to output video to external monitors.
Although not all notebooks can power up using USB Type-C, you’d be wise to invest in one that can. You see, this type is an industry standard so you can use the same adapter to charge smartphones and tablets. That’s regardless of the brand.
You should also take note of units that have Thunderbolt 3 ports. They’re fully compatible with type-C devices but support those fast Thunderbolt peripherals. With them, you can readily power up 4K monitors, transfer files to portable backup drives at incredible speeds, and even connect to an external video card. You read that right: laptops with Thunderbolt 3 ports can be made into decent gaming machines (if you hook them up with an external graphics solution, of course).
Intel 7th Generation Core CPU Naturally, you’d want your notebook built with the latest and most powerful processors available. If you’re after an unparalleled performance, get a laptop that comes with Intel’s newest CPUs.
Code-named “Kaby Lake” by the leading PC chip maker, this next generation of processors is capable of playing 4K video and conserving more battery juice. They’re expectedly faster than their predecessors, too.
Not sure if the portable computer you’re eyeing has the Intel 7th Generation Core series processor? Check if the processor serial number shown on the unit’s technical specs begin with 7 (for instance, “Core i5-7200U”)
802.11ac WiFi If you buy a new laptop, it’s most likely built with 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Why? This newer wireless standard gives you speeds three to 10 times faster than older standard even as you move farther from the router.
Although having a notebook with the newer Wi-Fi standard is the first step to boost wireless Internet speeds at home, it’s only half the battle. The other half is to get a router that supports the protocol so you can fully maximize the technology.
Another good reason to get an 802.11ac-capable router? Well, they give your smartphones’ wireless connection an instant speed boost.
OLED Display Ever owned the latest, high-end smartphone? You probably may have realized how a laptop’s screen quality significantly lags behind that of your smartphone’s. Seems unfair, isn’t it?
Worry not—laptops are slowly catching up in that department. In fact, we’re starting to see models using OLED displays lately (namely, ThinkPad X1 Yoga and Alienware 13). Meaning, their screens are pretty capable of rendering vibrant, crisp, and fine-looking images.
PCIe x4 SSD
Imagine a notebook that rouses from sleep almost instantly, boots faster, and opens programs in a blink of an eye. If that’s the kind of machine you want to lay your hands on, get a new laptop with an SSD (Solid-State Drive).
These aren’t only faster than your mechanical hard drive; they can significantly improve your whole computer experience.
While scouting for a perfect replacement for your old laptop, see if the one you’re planning to buy come with PCIe x4 SSD. Take note that they may be called NVMe or just PCIe SSD, though.
RealSense 3D Camera A cool feature you’ll find interesting on Windows 10 is something called Windows Hello. It basically lets you log into your computer just by peering at the screen. You need a new laptop built with an infrared camera (e.g. RealSense 3D camera) for this to work, though.
If the idea intrigues you, search for models that mention such a camera in its specifications. That or see if its label highlights anything like “Windows Hello facial recognition” as one of its features.
2-in-1 PCs By now, we’re sure you’ve heard or seen one. We’re absolutely certain the concept intrigues you as much as it fascinates us, too.
Indeed, these futuristic devices give you the best of both a new laptop and the tablet. Connect it to a touchpad and keyboard and you’d be breezing through desktop tasks (e.g. video editing, Web research, sending emails, etc.) Remove the peripherals and now you have a tablet to tag along with you on your daily commute.
Before you hit the nearest electronics store, keep this list of features in mind. Do that and we’re certain you’ll go home with nothing but the most capable new laptop available.

Why buy a laptop and a tablet separately when you can have them in one machine? With the best 2-in-1 laptops, you get the best of both worlds: the joy of typing on a traditional keyboard and the intuitive touchscreen browsing of a tablet.
What is a 2-in-1 Laptop? As the name suggests, a 2-in-1 laptop is actually a fusion of two devices: a tablet and a traditional laptop. It can sometimes be referred to as a convertible or hybrid laptop.
There are lots of different types of 2-in-1 touchscreen laptops available on the market today. Some have detachable keyboards, while others can only be folded behind the screen. Some have stylus pens, while others don’t. Prices range from several hundred dollars to almost $2,000.
Best Overall 2-in-1 Touchscreen Laptop The following convertible laptops come with premium features. They are great for business or for users that want to run software with heavy graphics.
HP Spectre x360
The HP Spectre x360 is one good-looking machine, with its edge-to-edge glass screen and “gem cut” design. But don’t let the charming chassis fool you, though, this hybrid laptop is quite a beast. The base model has an Intel i7 CPU and a 512GB SSD, which means it’s powerful enough to run almost any software. It also has 16BG of RAM, which means it’s fast enough to handle multiple browser tabs open at the same time.
The keyboard is the perfect size for efficient typing, and its touchscreen features are topnotch as well. The stylus is certainly useful for annotating or for digital drawing. The HP Spectre x360 also comes with other high-end features, such as a fingerprint reader, quad speakers, Thunderbolt USB support, USB-C ports, and a HP TrueVision FHD IR Camera with a digital microphone. It has four Bang & Olufsen speakers that are sure to make listening to your favorite Spotify playlists twice as delightful.
The Microsoft Surface Book 2 comes in a 13.5-inch and a 15-inch model. The larger model is a lot heavier at 4.2 pounds, but it packs a punch when it comes to features. This laptop-tablet has a clear and vibrant PixelSense display with multi-touch support. The display is detachable, too, which adds to its portability function.
You can choose between an Intel i5 and an i7 processor. If you like gaming and need to work on demanding programs, we suggest going for the 8th Gen Intel i7. It should be powerful enough for working on 3D animations or editing 4K videos, especially when combined with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 GPU.
On top of the strong processor, this hybrid laptop has lots of ports, including three USB ports, two Surface Connect ports, an SDXC card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. And, just like your typical portable tablet, the Surface Book 2 comes with both front and rear-facing cameras.

Batteries often wear out the fastest of all laptop components. So the sooner you can detect signs of wear and tear, the better your chance of extending your computer’s battery life. That’s why it’s important to learn how to check the health of the battery yourself.
Does that sound too technical for an average user like yourself? Don’t worry. We’ll guide you on how to complete this battery check-up the easy way.
How do you evaluate your computer’s battery life? Deep within Windows and Mac OS, there are hidden features helping you see how your notebook’s battery is doing. These technical reports are crucial in assessing your battery’s overall health. But you need to understand some jargon or concepts before you can interpret the “battery reports”.
Generating Battery Reports on Windows 7 and Higher On Windows, you can get an easy-to-understand report about your battery with a single command. Here’s how:
Open the Command Prompt window. Press Windows key + X (or right click on the Start Menu) and click the Command Prompt option. In Command Prompt, type the following command: “powercfg /batteryreport” and press Enter. The battery report will then be saved to the user account’s directory. Using Windows Explorer, head to your user directory to find and open the file.
The battery report is a simple HTML file and you typically see a variety of sections on it. The first one tells you the laptop’s basic specifications and the succeeding section shows you details about your installed batteries. In most cases, though, this part of the report will provide information for just one battery—the one you’re using.
The next section is the most important. Pay special attention to the figures under Design Capacity, Full Charge Capacity, and Cycle Count numbers. Design Capacity indicates the amount of power the battery theoretically holds. Full Charge Capacity means the total amount of power the battery actually manages to hold. Naturally, the stats under Full Charge Capacity will be lower than Design Capacity as a result of normal wear and tear on the battery. However, the difference shouldn’t be that great. If it is, you should be alarmed.
In addition, there’s the Cycle Count number. It shows how many charge cycles the battery has gone through from the time it has been initially used. Keep in mind that a laptop computer’s battery can only handle so many charge cycles. 500 seems to be the magic number when it comes to charge cycle counts, which may roughly be equivalent to two to three years’ worth of heavy usage.
Other sections of the report that will further help with diagnosing the state of your battery are the following:
Battery usage shows a graph of how your battery drained in the last three days of use. Battery capacity history shows a comparison of full charge capacity and design capacity. The former may be commonly lower than the latter in most reports. Recent usage displays your device’s power states in the last 3 days, including how much the battery capacity has drained over time. Usage history exhibits how much time your laptop has relied on battery power and how long it has spent plugged to a power source. Battery life estimates shows an estimate of the equipment’s average battery life based on how you actually used it. Checking the Battery Health of a Mac Computer For Mac users, evaluating the health of their battery is a much more straightforward process. Simply hold down Option and then click on the battery icon found on the menu bar. Pay attention to the “Condition” detail on the dropdown menu, which will display any of these battery conditions:
Normal means the battery is working alright. Replace Soon means while your battery may be working just fine, it may hold less charge than before. Replace Now means that the battery is performing normally but it holds significantly less charge than ever before. Service Battery means that the battery is no longer working like it’s supposed to. You should bring it in to an Apple Store to get it checked. If you’re curious to know how far your MacBook has gone into its battery cycle count and its implication on your Mac’s built-in power source, check out Apple’s support document on battery life.
Can I restore life into my dying battery? Of course, the logical next step is to replace your laptop’s battery. If you’re not ready to shell out $100+ for replacements, though, you could try a few last-ditch attempts at restoring life into your ailing power storage.
Recalibrate the Battery When your computer’s OS can’t figure out how much power your battery can hold, it probably needs recalibration. This happens when the netbook is constantly tethered to the mains or it never had to “die” all the way.
Although many laptop manufacturers nowadays provide calibration tools for certain notebook models, you can always do it manually. Simply follow these procedures:
Fully charge your battery and leave it plugged for about 2 hours to cool it down. Disconnect the portable computer from the power source and let the battery drain fully. The best way to do this is to leave the computer on until it either shuts down or sleeps/hibernates. Keep the device turned off for the next 3 to 5 hours. Turn it on and charge the unit all the way to 100%. You’re done! “Trick” the Charge Cycle A charge cycle is counted whenever a full battery drains all the way down and then recharged to its maximum capacity. To keep your lithium ion (Li-ion) battery from exhausting its maximum amount of charge cycles, “trick” it into counting fewer cycle counts per charge. Do this by plugging your netbook as soon as it drops around 35% to 45% levels and letting it charge only up to 75% or 85% every time. This way, you won’t use up as many charge and recharge cycles and effectively expand the lifetime of your unit.
Keep Your Laptop Cool and Comfy If your laptop gets really hot when you’re using it, you run the risk of damaging your battery. A damaged battery typically drains faster than normal, which could effectively shorten its life. Don’t let this happen to your battery by getting a reliable cooling pad for your notebook. When you do, you’ll be surprised at how a cooler battery loses charge slower.
Caring for your laptop computer’s battery life is an indispensable part of maintaining the equipment itself. Good thing that it’s fairly easy to evaluate and preserve its health.
To better care for your batteries, be careful not to fall victim to 7 myths about laptop batteries. Such dangerous misconceptions could be in the way of you properly maintaining your notebook, after all.

Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G that is set to debut alongside the Oppo Reno 3 later this month has apparently reached China’s regulator TENAA. The new flagship smartphone has been spotted on the TENAA database with model number PCRM00 and PCRT00. One of the listings on the regulator’s portal includes a few renders that showcase the design of the Oppo Reno 3 Pro that was teased recently. Further, the TENAA listings of the Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G indicates its key specifications.
There are two distinct TENAA listings of the Oppo phone that is believed to be the Reno 3 Pro 5G — with one carrying its renders. However, both are showing the same list of specifications.
Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G specifications As per the TENAA listings, the Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G will come with a 6.5-inch full-HD+ (1080×2400 pixels) AMOLED display along with 20:9 aspect ratio. The images provided on the TENAA portal also shows a hole-punch design and curved edges that both we saw on the official teasers in the recent past.
The listings also show that the Oppo phone will be powered by an octa-core processor clocked at 2.4GHz. This is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC that was launched at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit in Maui, Hawaii last week.
Alongside the new Snapdragon SoC, the Oppo Reno 3 Pro could have 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. It is unclear whether the phone also has a microSD card slot for storage expansion.
In terms of the imaging capabilities, the Oppo Reno 3 Pro could come with a quad rear camera setup that will house a 48-megapixel primary sensor, coupled with a 13-megapixel secondary sensor. The TENAA listings also show 8-megapixel and 2-megapixel sensors that will be available alongside the primary and secondary sensors. Further, the phone could include a 32-megapixel selfie camera at the front.
The TENAA listings list the presence of an in-display fingerprint sensor, Android 10, and a 3,935mAh battery on the new Oppo phone. Also, the phone appears to have 172 grams of weight and measure 159.4×72.4×7.7mm.
If we look at what has been revealed through its official teasers, there will be the Oppo Reno 3 and Oppo Reno 3 Pro as the two new smartphones in the Reno family. The latter will come as the flagship model with a slim build carrying thin bezels along with a curved design. However, the former would be a new mid-range smartphone by the Chinese company featuring a waterdrop-style display notch.
A TENAA listing suggesting the key specifications of the Oppo Reno 3 surfaced online earlier this month. It showed the new phone with model number PCPM00.
