Wi-Fi 6E Standard Announced by Wi-Fi Alliance, Meant to Improve on Wi-Fi 6 Using 6GHz Spectrum

Wi-Fi Alliance has announced a new 6GHz spectrum called Wi-Fi 6E, meant to overcome the hurdles Wi-Fi 6 faces. In addition to the features and capabilities of Wi-Fi 6, the newer Wi-Fi 6E also promises to offer higher performance, lower latency, and faster data rates – extended into the 6GHz band. Moreover, we’ll get to see Wi-Fi 6E supported devices soon become available once the regulatory approvals are sanctioned. Wi-Fi 6E will utilize 6GHz to deliver much anticipated augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) use cases for consumer, enterprise, and industrial environments.

CES 2020: MediaTek Dimensity 800 Series 5G-Enabled SoCs Announced for Mid-Range Smartphones

Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company MediaTek on Tuesday launched Dimensity 800 Series chips for the premium yet mid-price range 5G smartphones. The Dimensity 800 5G chipset family offers powerful system-on-chips (SoCs) with integrated 5G modems, the company announced at the CES 2020. The first devices featuring Dimensity 800 Series SoCs are expected to launch in the first half of this year.

“MediaTek has already launched its flagship 5G smartphone solution, the Dimensity 1000, and with the 800 series 5G chipset family, we are bringing 5G to the mid-tier and mass market,” TL Lee, Head of MediaTek’s wireless business unit, said in a statement.

“The Dimensity 800 series will power the new premium segment for 5G, bringing consumers flagship smartphone features and performance at midrange price points,” Lee added. The single chip solutions are claimed to offer an unrivalled combination of connectivity, multimedia, AI and imaging innovations packed into an ultra-efficient 7nm chip.

As per the company, the Dimensity 800 series integrates MediaTek’s 5G modem in one compact design, delivering significant platform power savings compared to two-chip alternatives. It is designed to support both standalone and non-standalone sub-6GHz networks, apart from two carrier aggregation (2CC CA), and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS).

The Dimensity 800 Series is an octa-core SoC featuring four ARM Cortex-A76 cores clocked up to 2GHz, and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked up to the same frequency. It also bears four Dimensity 1000-class GPU IP cores, combined with the company’s HyperEngine gaming tech. The APU 3.0 unit on board is meant to process AI-specific tasks, while the SoC supports up to 64-megapixel camera sensors, and large multi-camera options such as 32-megapixel + 16-megapixel dual cameras. MediaTek is also touting multi-frame 4K video HDR capabilities, and support for up to 90Hz full-HD resolution displays.

Asus at CES 2020: ROG Swift 360Hz, ROG Swift PG32UQX 144Hz Gaming Monitors Launched

Asus and its Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand on Monday at CES 2020 announced two new gaming monitors, the ROG Swift 360Hz and ROG Swift PG32UQX. The first is a 24.5-inch Nvidia G-Sync supporting e-sports display with a jaw-dropping 360Hz refresh rate, while the latter is a 32-inch Nvidia G-Sync gaming monitor with a 144Hz refresh rate. The ROG Swift 360Hz and ROG Swift PG32UQX displays will be available later this year, with pricing to be announced closer to availability.

The Asus ROG Swift 360Hz gaming monitor is claimed by Asus to put out a whopping 50 percent more frames every second compared to ‘conventional’ 240Hz monitors, supplying e-sports and competitive gamers with the edge they need to win. As we mentioned, the ROG Swift 360Hz is Nvidia G-Sync certified, and features a full-HD resolution. Unfortunately, pricing and exactly availability information is not known for now.

Coming to the Asus ROG Swift PG32UQX, the gaming monitor is Nvidia G-Sync Ultimate certified. It also features DisplayHDR 1400 compliance for displaying HDR content. The 32-inch 4K resolution monitor has a 16:9 aspect ratio, a 10-bit colour panel. It uses Mini-LED backlighting tech, said to help deliver a peak brightness of 1,400 nits. It has a 144Hz refresh rate, and Asus is also touting 1,152 zones of dynamic local dimming.

“The ROG Swift PG32UQX doesn’t hold back in style, designed with multiple textures on the back of the display, separated by a subtle diagonal chrome strip. An Aura Sync-enabled RGB LED ROG logo lets users coordinate the PG32UQX with other Aura Sync-enabled components for a fully harmonised battle station. And a logo projector in the base of the ROG trademark twisted stand lets users show off the Republic of Gamers logo or display a customized logo using the included blank discs,” the company said in a statement.

Qualcomm at CES 2020: Lenovo Unveils Yoga 5G ‘World’s First 5G PC’, First Oppo, Xiaomi Snapdragon 865 Phones Coming in Q1

Qualcomm and Lenovo have unveiled a 5G-enabled laptop based on the Snapdragon 8cx 5G Compute Platform and leveraging the Windows on Snapdragon initiative, at CES 2020 today. The Lenovo Yoga 5G is being billed as the “world’s first 5G PC” and is the culmination of the work done on the ‘Project Limitless’ concept first shown off at Computex 2019. The ultraportable 2-in-1 runs Windows 10 and is designed for use cases that centre around always-on 5G connectivity. It is capable of using the mm wave as well as sub-6Ghz bands. The device will go on sale starting at $1,499 (approximately Rs. 1,06,000) in spring 2020 in some parts of the world.

Lenovo’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Consumer Business and Intelligent Devices Group, Johnson Jia, joined Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon on stage at the latter’s press conference to unveil the Lenovo Yoga 5G. Key innovations that he highlighted were a unique antenna design that preserves 5G connectivity no matter whether the device is used as a laptop or tablet; improved heat dissipation compared to previous-generation products in a thin-and-light fanless body; and adaptive fast charging.

The company is promising 24 hours of battery life. As for other specifications, Jia announced that the device has a 14-inch full-HD IPS touchscreen, an integrated fingerprint reader plus IR camera for Windows Hello security, Dolby Atmos sound enhancement, and eSIM support.

Potential use cases for 5G connectivity with low latency include high-resolution video streaming, faster file transfers, real-time video chats on the go, and responsive gaming. Jia also touted the potential of a personal 5G cellular data connection being more secure than a public Wi-Fi hotspot.

Jia and Amon characterised this launch as just one product in a long line of planned devices. The companies also said they are interested in partnering with mobile network operators and cloud service providers to bring faster, easier, and more secure experiences to more people.

Also at the Qualcomm press conference, Amon discussed momentum for the recently announced Snapdragon 865 SoC with integrated 5G, which will be seen in new flagship products from Oppo and Xiaomi in Q1 2020, as well as Motorola at an unspecified point in 2020.

According to Amon, 2020 is the year that 5G is expected to scale out, driving demand for new smartphones even in mature markets. One billion 5G connections are expected by 2023, which will be two years quicker than 4G took to reach the same audience. That number will rise to 2.8 billion by 2025. He also characterised the 2X increase in design wins for the Snapdragon 865 compared to the Snapdragon 855 as “a very important sign that the market is moving towards 5G smartphones on a global scale”. He also added “The best 4G phone you can buy today is a 5G smartphone”.

The lower-end 5G-enabled Snapdragon 765 and 765G SoCs have also achieved 2.5X the traction of previous-gen Snapdragon 7xx models, with the first smartphone already launched by Oppo for the Chinese domestic market.

Another growth area for 5G is expected to be fixed wireless connections for homes, offices, or other premises. The combination of 5G for Internet access and Wi-Fi 6 for local connection sharing has also gained traction with 34 OEMs developing Snapdragon 855-based CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) hardware.
