After facing criticism that the tech giant relies more on low-cost, third-party temporary workers, Google has announced to hire 3,800 “in-house” full-time employees in 2020 at various sites, including in India who will provide customer care support 24/7.
To date, customer and user support, such as answering calls, product troubleshooting and campaign set-up, has often been supplied by third-party organisations on Google’s behalf at various back-end outsourcing hubs across the world including India.
“In 2020, we’ll be expanding our footprint by opening a Google Operations Centre in Mississippi, to join new and expanding sites in India and the Philippines,” Troy Dickerson, Vice President, Google Operations Centre, said in a statement late Thursday.
In 2018, Google announced a pilot programme to enhance customer and user support by bringing some of these jobs in-house, so the work is undertaken by employees.
“Based on the great feedback we’ve received, we’re expanding by the end of 2020, we will have created more than 4,800 Google customer support jobs, including the 1,000 Google customer support agents already working in our Google Operations Centers,” informed Dickerson.
Agents at Google Operations Centres would receive industry-leading wages and benefits, including three weeks of paid vacation, up to 22 weeks of paid parental leave and comprehensive health care (medical, dental and vision coverage).
“Agents can also participate in local culture clubs and have access to free meals while at work,” said Google.
The Google Operations Centre provides user and customer support to Google’s customers and users around the world.
Google Operations Centre employees would receive industry-leading benefits, including, company-paid life and disability insurance and access to free meals while at work, local culture clubs and other on-site facilities such as mother’s rooms, games rooms, and collaboration spaces.
“Mississippi will be the first US-based Google Operations Centre and is set to open in late 2020, to join new and expanding sites in India and the Philippines,” said Google.
The announcement came after 10 US Senators in August called on Google to make contractors full-time employees after they’ve worked with the company for more than six months.
The demand followed a New York Times report in May that claimed Google employed 1,21,000 contract employees and 1,02,000 full-time employees.
“We urge Google to end any abuse of these worker classifications and treat all Google workers equally,” the senators said in a letter.
An earlier Recode report claimed that contractors made significantly less than full-time Google employees.
The Senators asked Google for automatic transition from temporary workers to permanent full-time Google employee after six months.
Eileen Naughton, Vice President of People Operations, wrote in a reply that the company “strongly disagrees with any suggestion that Google misuses independent contractors or temporary workers”.
The Internet giant is also facing internal activism and the company last week fired fifth employee for sending browser pop-ups about the labour rights at the company.
The US government has also launched a probe into Google over its labour practices following a complaint from four employees who were earlier fired by the tech giant.
In a statement, Google said it dismissed four individuals engaged in intentional and often repeated violations of its long-standing data security policies.

Redmi K20 Pro has started receiving a new MIUI 11 update that includes bug fixes, Xiaomi confirmed to Gadgets 360. The new update, which comes with software version MIUI 11.0.3.0.QFKINXM, doesn’t bring a new security patch as the phone still has the November Android security patch. Separately, the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro have started supporting HD video playback on Amazon Prime Video. Although both Redmi K-series phones have Widevine L1 certification to support high-quality video streaming, Amazon hadn’t provided HD video playback up until now.
Xiaomi has brought the new software update to the Redmi K20 Pro with version MIUI 11.0.3.0.QFKINXM. The update is sized between 520MB and 2.2GB — depending upon the existing software version.
As per the changelog provided by Xiaomi, the latest update includes a fix for the issue that could affect notification settings while using Second space. The update also renames the GPS toggle as “Location” and optimises the Clock app to show “more obvious naming” for local time. Further, there is a fix for the issue that could cause images to overlap while scrolling screenshots.
Xiaomi has confirmed to Gadgets 360 that it has started rolling out the new software update to the Redmi K20 Pro. However, we weren’t able to spot it on our review unit. FoneArena first reported its rollout.
Having said that, you can manually check the availability of the latest update on your Redmi K20 Pro by going through Settings > About phone > System update.
In addition to the new software update, the Redmi K20 Pro as well as the Redmi K20 have received HD video playback support on Amazon Prime Video.
As per some user reports dated back in late July, the Redmi K20 phones didn’t support HD video playback for Prime Video content despite bearing Widevine L1 certification that is meant for enabling high-definition video streaming. A post on MIUI forums, however, has announced the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro have now started supporting HD video playback on Prime Video.
“Though Redmi K20 series is L1 supportable device, but Amazon Prime HD contents were lacking by the device as the content provider hadn’t white-listed the device previously. Well, now the rejoice time is here for Amazon Prime lovers as HD and FHD contents are now available for the Redmi K20 series,” one of the moderators wrote on the MIUI forums.
To start watching HD and HD 1080p videos through Amazon Prime Video on your Redmi K20 or Redmi K20 Pro, you need to enable the Use highest quality on Wi-Fi option on the app by going to Settings > Stream & Download > Streaming Quality. If you don’t have a Wi-Fi connection, you can switch to the Best streaming quality option. It is also worth pointing out that you are required to use a stable and high-speed Internet connection to avail the new experience.
Gadgets 360 was able to verify the arrival of HD video playback on the Redmi K20 series by downloading the latest Amazon Prime Video version (3.0.261.16341) through Google Play. However, XDA Developers reports that the new change is yet to reach the devices that have unlocked bootloader.

Oppo Reno 3 and Oppo Reno 3 Pro are all set to launch in China next week, and the phones has now been photographed in the wild. Live images of the phones being used with the display turned on have surfaced online. The photos show the phones from the front and back, revealing design details and colour options. They pretty much match with all previous leaks, and its TENAA listings as well. The Oppo Reno 3 is sporting a Blue finish with a unique gradient texture, while the Oppo Reno 3 Pro has been snapped in two colour options.
The Oppo Reno 3 photos have been leaked on Weibo, and the phone has been spotted being used in the wild. This is probably a test unit that has been photographed. The Oppo Reno 3 is seen with a waterdrop-style notch up front and a slight chin at the bottom of the display. The device sports a quad camera setup at the back, with the flash sitting on its right, and the back panel has a unique Blue gradient pattern. The phone’s display is turned on, and it reveals that the Oppo Reno 3 will be running on Android 10 based on ColorOS software, pack 8GB RAM, and offer 128GB internal storage. The display also confirms dual-SIM slots, and has listed the model number as PDCM00, which is the same model number that was spotted on TENAA earlier. The phone is also listed on TENAA with model number PCPM00.
Separately, live shots of the Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G were also leaked on Weibo, showing off the phone from all angles. The Pro variant is seen to sport a hole-punch display with the cut out placed on the top left edge of the screen, and the back panel shows a quad camera setup. The phone has been snapped in two colour options – White and Blue. The names of these colour options are not known. Unlike the Oppo Reno 3 display that revealed few specification details, the Reno 3 Pro display photos show the UI instead. The new UI will offer rounded square shaped app icons, and no app drawer is noticed on the screen. The tipster notes that the phone is very thin.
The Oppo Reno 3 is confirmed to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000L 5G SoC, and the Oppo Reno 3 Pro will be powered by the Snapdragon 765G SoC. Both the phones should pack a 64-megapixel sensor, but the Reno 3 might not integrate a Sony sensor. The phones will launch in China on December 26
