HMD Global is all set to launch at least one new smartphone today at an event in Cairo. The Nokia-branded phone set to launch today has so far been kept under the wraps, and we are yet to come across any concrete leaks that could reveal the details about the upcoming phone. However, rumours suggest that HMD Global might lift the covers from the Nokia 8.2 at its December 5 event. And keeping in mind the December 2018 launch of Nokia 8.1, it is plausible that Nokia 8.2 will be launched today as its successor. Which phone will Nokia launch? The year-long gap between the Nokia 8.1’s launch and today’s event suggests that its successor – tentatively called Nokia 8.2 – might finally see the light of the day. Another possibility is that HMD Global might launch the Nokia 5.2 packing a 48-megapixel rear camera and the Snapdragon 660 SoC. To recall, the phone was leaked back in July, and some of its purported live images also surfaced online.
It is also being tipped that the phone being launched today will be the Nokia 2.3, successor to the Nokia 2.2. The phone was recently spotted in a distributor database and is said to arrive in three colour options, with one of them being called “Charcoal”. As per another leak, the Nokia 2.3 will reportedly be priced at EUR 97 (roughly Rs. 7,700) upon its launch. As for features, it is tipped to pack a 6.1-inch HD display and a 3,920mAh battery. The dual-SIM variant of the phone, carrying the model number TA-1206, has already been certified in Malaysia, Russia, and the US.

Motorola One Hyper has finally been launched after a flurry of last-minute leaks. It is the first Motorola-branded Android phone to come equipped with a pop-up selfie camera module that houses a 32-megapixel sensor. Motorola One Hyper is also the first phone from the company to pack a 64-megapixel main camera and a full-screen display devoid of a notch or hole-punch. It is powered by the ageing octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 SoC and is protected by a layer of p2i nano-coating to keep liquid damage at bay.
Motorola One Hyper price, availability Motorola’s first 64-megapixel phone, the Motorola One Hyper, has been priced at $399.99 (roughly Rs. 29,000) for its sole variant and is already up for grabs in the US, Latin America and some European markets. It comes in Deep Sea Blue, Dark Amber, and Fresh Orchid colour options. The phone will also arrive in some Middle East markets in the upcoming months, but there is no word if, or when, it will make its way to the Indian markets. We have reached out to Motorola for confirmation and will add it response when we hear back.
Motorola One Hyper specifications The dual-SIM (Nano) Motorola One Hyper runs vanilla Android 10 with a few in-houses features such as Moto Actions and Moto Display thrown into the mix. It features a 6.5-inch full-HD+ (1080 x 2340 pixels) LCD display with 19:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 395ppi. Motorola calls this design Total Vision as it offers an almost full-screen experience akin to recently launched smartphones such as the Vivo V17 Pro and the Oppo Reno 2.
Motorola One Hyper is powered by Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 675 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM. Interestingly, the new Motorola phone packs just two cameras at the back, while its more affordable siblings launched earlier this year had triple rear cameras. The main snapper is a 64-megapixel sensor with an f/1.9 lens and 0.8 micron pixel size. It employs the quad pixel technology to capture 16-megapixel photos after creating a larger 1.6 micron pixel.
The main camera is accompanied by an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture and 118-degrees field of view. Housed in a pop-up camera module is a 32-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture and 0.8 micron pixel size. It also utilises the quad pixel technology to capture brighter 8-megapixel pixel-binned photos. Camera features include Night Vision, RAW capture, hi-res zoom, and fill-HD 60fps videos capture among others.
Motorola One Hyper offers 128GB of inbuilt storage that can further be expanded via a microSD card (up to 1TB). Connectivity options on the phone include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, A-GPS, LTEPP, SUPL, GLONASS, and Galileo. It packs a 4,000mAh battery that supports 45W Hyper Charge technology. However, the retail package will come equipped with a 15W TurboPower charger, while the 45W charger will be sold separately in some regions.
Sensors onboard the Motorola One Hyper include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, compass, fingerprint sensor, gyroscope, proximity sensor, and a SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) sensor. Dimensions of the phone are 161.8 x 76.6 x 8.9mm and it tips the scales at around 200 grams. The phone has a plastic build with a water repellent design, and has a USB Type-C port and 3.5mm headphone jack.

Qualcomm kicked off the first day of its annual Tech Summit in Maui, Hawaii, with the announcement of three new smartphone chipsets. The first is the Snapdragon 865 flagship SoC, which succeeds the Snapdragon 855 and 855+ chipsets. The new chip supports the X55 5G modem launched earlier this year but doesn’t come integrated with it. Additionally, it boasts of improved AI performance and up to 25 percent increase in graphics capabilities. The new chip will be seen in flagship smartphones early next year, from partners such as Oppo, Xiaomi, ZTE and more.
The Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 765G were the other two chips announced, and are probably the most interesting offerings as they feature an integrated 5G modem, and will be seen in more affordable phones. HMD Global will be among the first company’s to launch a new phone early next year, based on the Snapdragon 765 mobile platform.
Qualcomm hasn’t shared a lot of details about these new chipsets yet, as its planning on revealing them over the course of the next two days. From what was announced today, the Snapdragon 865 SoC will have an improved AI engine, capable of 15TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second), which Qualcomm says is more than twice of the Snapdragon 855. The new ISP is also said to be capable of shooting 8K video at 30fps and decoding 8K video at 60fps. Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 765 and 765G are also said to offer enhanced capabilities such as HDR10 4K video recording and support for up to 192-megapixel camera sensors.
Qualcomm also announced its next-generation ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology called 3D Sonic Max. It’s said to offer a recognition area which is 17x larger than the previous generation and support for authentication of two fingers, simultaneously.
The chipmaker also revealed that BlackShark, Coolpad, iQOO, Lenovo, Meizu, nubia RedMagic, OnePlus, Realme, Redmi, Smartisan, TCL, vivo, Wingtech, ZTE, and 8848 will employ the freshly announced 5G SoCs in their phones next year.

Lenovo-owned Motorola has tried a bunch of strategies, but nothing really seems to stick when it comes to bringing the company back to its former glory. Recent years have seen Motorola focus on affordable and mid-range smartphones, usually powered by Qualcomm’s second-tier chipsets. However, 2020 could see the company return to the flagship smartphone space in terms of the chipset used. Motorola’s Sergio Buniac announced at the Snapdragon Summit 2019 that the company will launch new smartphones on the Snapdragon 865 and 765 platforms.
“As the mobile arm, Motorola will continue leading the 5G era with our expanded lineup of 5G solutions in 2020 — driven by the high-performing Snapdragon 765 and 865 Mobile Platforms, re-invigorating our place in the premium flagship space,” said Buniac. His statement suggests that Motorola is working on smartphones on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 865 platforms to be launched in the coming months.
This means that we could potentially see a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865-powered Motorola Razr and other flagship devices in 2020, which would be the company’s first smartphones on a Snapdragon 800-series chipset in a long time. The last smartphone launched by Motorola to feature a flagship Qualcomm chipset was the Motorola Moto Z3 in August 2018. Motorola did launch the $1500 Moto Razr (2019) recently, but it’s worth mentioning that the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset.
Qualcomm’s latest chipsets will power most flagship and premium Android smartphones in 2020, along with pushing ahead with 5G connectivity the world over. While the Snapdragon 765 comes with integrated 5G connectivity, the Snapdragon 865 will come with superior processing power and support for the X55 5G modem. Devices running on these two platforms are likely to be unveiled at and around MWC 2020 this coming February.
