Apple is reportedly planing to use Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology in one iPhone model, set to be released in 2020. The iPhone maker was partnering with Taiwanese touchscreen maker GIS to develop an iPhone for 2020 or 2021 that could use the under-display tech, MacRumors reported on Wednesday. Qualcomm unveiled the new 3D Sonic Max ultrasonic fingerprint reader on Tuesday at its third annual Snapdragon Technology Summit.
Qualcomm supplies ultrasonic fingerprint sensors for Samsung’s Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 smartphones. But iPhones could use an even more advanced version of the technology by 2020 or 2021 rolls in.
JP Morgan analyst Samik Chatterjee believes, Apple will release a 5.4-inch iPhone, two 6.1-inch iPhones and one 6.7-inch iPhone with 5G connectivity in 2020.
Chatterjee predicts the company may introduce two high-end models (one 6.1-inch and one 6.7-inch) with support for mmWave, as well as a triple-lens camera and “world facing” 3D sensing for improved augmented reality capabilities.
While, two low-end models (6.1-inch, 5.4-inch) will not have mmWave or World facing 3D sensing, and will have a dual-lens camera.
As per the report, Apple may use Qualcomm’s X55 modems in all its 2020 iPhones, which support both mmWave and sub-6GHz spectrum.
All four iPhone models will have OLEDs. Apple might be using OLED displays from Samsung that are thinner than the displays currently being used.

Huawei’s latest wearable comes equipped with a heart rate sensor as well as SpO2 sensor for gauging blood oxygen saturation levels. The Huawei Band 4 Pro features 0.95-inch AMOLED display and also offers NFC support for making contactless payments. It can track 11 different types of exercises, and also has an activity alert feature that reminds users on detecting prolonged sedentary sessions. The Huawei Band 4 Pro also comes with built-in GPS for navigation. Additionally, a new variant of the Huawei Enjoy 10S phone has been unveiled by the company.
Huawei Band 4 Pro price, availability The Huawei Band 4 Pro is priced at CNY 399 (roughly Rs. 4,000) and comes in a trio of colours – Black, Pink, and Red. It is now up for pre-orders in China and will be up for grabs starting December 12. At the ongoing Snapdragon Tech Summit, Qualcomm has expanded its portfolio of chips for Windows on ARM PCs, with the introduction of the Snapdragon 8c and Snapdragon 7c. These new chips are designed for mainstream and entry-level PCs respectively, and just like the Snapdragon 8cx launched last year, are said to deliver AI-accelerated performance, long battery life and built-in cellular connectivity. Qualcomm also announced the Snapdragon 8cx Enterprise compute platform that adds connected security software, Microsoft Secured-Core PC, geofencing and cellular connected security support for enterprise customers. These features apply to all tiers of Qualcomm’s compute platform. Qualcomm hasn’t announced any new products based on these new chip or when we can expect them in the market.
The Snapdragon 7c compute platform is said to be designed for entry-level Windows 10 laptops in the sub-$400 (roughly Rs. 29,000) price range. It promises a 25 percent boost in system performance and twice the battery life of competing platforms. It also features a Snapdragon X15 LTE modem for on-the-go cellular connectivity. The Snapdragon 7c comprises of a Kryo 468 CPU and an Adreno 618 GPU. The built-in AI engine is said to be able to deliver over 5TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) on Windows 10. The Snapdragon 7c supports eight Kryo 468 CPU cores and an Adreno 618 GPU.
The Snapdragon 8cx Enterprise compute platform offers over 9TOPS of AI acceleration, 5G and Wi-Fi 6 support, dual 4K display out, and Microsoft Secured-core PC support.
Coming to the Snapdragon 8c, it’s built on the 7nm process and promises a performance boost of up to 30 percent over the Snapdragon 850. Laptops based on this chip are expected to retail around or under the $600 mark (roughly Rs. 43,000). This chip has a Snapdragon X24 LTE modem in-built that is said to deliver Gigabit connectivity speeds. It’s also compatible with the new X55 5G modem. The AI engine is a bit more powerful too compared to the Snapdragon 7c, delivering over 6TOPS of performance. It uses eight Kryo 490 cores and an Adreno 675 GPU. Other features includes support for the fourth generation Qualcomm AI engine, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5, support for 4K resolution displays and LPDDR4x RAM.

Apple on Thursday said it has bought the first-ever commercial batch of carbon-free aluminium from a joint venture between two of the world’s biggest aluminium suppliers.
The metal is being made by Elysis, a Montreal-based joint venture of Alcoa Corp and Rio Tinto announced last year with $144 million (roughly Rs. 1,027 crores) in funding from the two companies, Apple and the governments of Canada and Quebec.
The aluminium will be shipped this month from an Alcoa research facility in Pittsburgh and used in Apple products, although the technology company did not say which ones.
Aluminium is carbon-intensive to produce. The smelting process involves passing electrical current through a large block of carbon called an anode, which burns off during the process and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
The carbon-free move is a response to consumer, activist and investor demand that miners and manufacturers show they are working to lessen their impact on climate change.
“For more than 130 years, aluminium – a material common to so many products consumers use daily – has been produced the same way. That’s about to change,” Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, said in a statement.
Apple uses aluminium housings for many of its electronics, including iPhones, Apple Watches and Mac computers. Apple last year introduced Mac models that use recycled aluminium.
The Alcoa-Rio joint venture wants to commercialize a technology by 2024 that uses a ceramic anode to make aluminium and emits only oxygen, eliminating direct greenhouse gas emissions from the smelting process.
Alcoa has already produced test metal with the process and joined with Rio Tinto to bring it up to commercial scale. Elysis plans to license the technology and says that existing smelting facilities can be retrofitted to use it.
The first batch was made in Pittsburgh, but Elysis also plans to manufacture it at a $50 million (roughly Rs. 356.7 crores) CAD research facility being built in Saguenay, Quebec, and that is expected to come online in the second half of 2020.
Apple and Elysis would not disclose the size or cost of the first purchase. They described it as a “commercial batch,” and Elysis said the process is expected to have lower operating costs than traditional aluminium smelting.
