Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Smartphone SoC Announced, Snapdragon 765 and 765G With Integrated 5G Debut As Well

Qualcomm kicked off the first day of its annual Tech Summit in Maui, Hawaii, with the announcement of three new smartphone chipsets. The first is the Snapdragon 865 flagship SoC, which succeeds the Snapdragon 855 and 855+ chipsets. The new chip supports the X55 5G modem launched earlier this year but doesn’t come integrated with it. Additionally, it boasts of improved AI performance and up to 25 percent increase in graphics capabilities. The new chip will be seen in flagship smartphones early next year, from partners such as Oppo, Xiaomi, ZTE and more.

The Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 765G were the other two chips announced, and are probably the most interesting offerings as they feature an integrated 5G modem, and will be seen in more affordable phones. HMD Global will be among the first company’s to launch a new phone early next year, based on the Snapdragon 765 mobile platform.

Qualcomm hasn’t shared a lot of details about these new chipsets yet, as its planning on revealing them over the course of the next two days. From what was announced today, the Snapdragon 865 SoC will have an improved AI engine, capable of 15TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second), which Qualcomm says is more than twice of the Snapdragon 855. The new ISP is also said to be capable of shooting 8K video at 30fps and decoding 8K video at 60fps. Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 765 and 765G are also said to offer enhanced capabilities such as HDR10 4K video recording and support for up to 192-megapixel camera sensors.

Qualcomm also announced its next-generation ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology called 3D Sonic Max. It’s said to offer a recognition area which is 17x larger than the previous generation and support for authentication of two fingers, simultaneously.

The chipmaker also revealed that BlackShark, Coolpad, iQOO, Lenovo, Meizu, nubia RedMagic, OnePlus, Realme, Redmi, Smartisan, TCL, vivo, Wingtech, ZTE, and 8848 will employ the freshly announced 5G SoCs in their phones next year.

Motorola Promises to Launch Flagship Smartphones With Latest Qualcomm Chipsets in 2020

Lenovo-owned Motorola has tried a bunch of strategies, but nothing really seems to stick when it comes to bringing the company back to its former glory. Recent years have seen Motorola focus on affordable and mid-range smartphones, usually powered by Qualcomm’s second-tier chipsets. However, 2020 could see the company return to the flagship smartphone space in terms of the chipset used. Motorola’s Sergio Buniac announced at the Snapdragon Summit 2019 that the company will launch new smartphones on the Snapdragon 865 and 765 platforms.

“As the mobile arm, Motorola will continue leading the 5G era with our expanded lineup of 5G solutions in 2020 — driven by the high-performing Snapdragon 765 and 865 Mobile Platforms, re-invigorating our place in the premium flagship space,” said Buniac. His statement suggests that Motorola is working on smartphones on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 865 platforms to be launched in the coming months.

This means that we could potentially see a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865-powered Motorola Razr and other flagship devices in 2020, which would be the company’s first smartphones on a Snapdragon 800-series chipset in a long time. The last smartphone launched by Motorola to feature a flagship Qualcomm chipset was the Motorola Moto Z3 in August 2018. Motorola did launch the $1500 Moto Razr (2019) recently, but it’s worth mentioning that the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset.

Qualcomm’s latest chipsets will power most flagship and premium Android smartphones in 2020, along with pushing ahead with 5G connectivity the world over. While the Snapdragon 765 comes with integrated 5G connectivity, the Snapdragon 865 will come with superior processing power and support for the X55 5G modem. Devices running on these two platforms are likely to be unveiled at and around MWC 2020 this coming February.

Flipkart Big Shopping Days Sale 2019 Announced: Deals, Offers on Mobile Phones, TVs, Laptops & More Previewed

Flipkart Big Shopping Days Sale has made yet another appearance in 2019, with the e-commerce giant announcing the dates and previewing some offers ahead of the start. The Flipkart sale will provide deals, discounts, and offers on a range of smartphones, tablets, TVs, and laptops among other product categories. The five-day sale that will begin starting Sunday, December 1, will bring discounted prices of the Realme 5, Samsung Galaxy S9, and Apple iPhone 7. Flipkart claims that it will also offer up to 75 percent discount on TVs and electronic appliances as well as 80 percent discount on laptops and cameras. Further, HDFC Bank customers participating in the Flipkart Big Shopping Days sale to offer a 10 percent instant discount on purchases made through HDFC Bank cards and EMI transactions.

As per the microsite released by Flipkart, the Big Shopping Days Sale will take place between December 1 and December 5. Flipkart Plus members will get early access to the sale starting 8pm on Saturday, November 30.

Intel Unveils New Design, Engineering Centre in Hyderabad

Expanding its innovation footprint in India, global chip-making giant Intel on Monday unveiled its new design and engineering centre which was inaugurated by Telangana’s Information Technology Minister K. T. Rama Rao.

Spread across 300,000 square feet, the centre can accommodate 1,500 people. The state-of-the-art facility comprises six LEED Platinum certified floors, modern amenities and an incubation centre for hardware and systems start ups in the IT corridor of the city.

LEED or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design Platinum certification is the highest rating for green buildings, recognised worldwide.

“Over the past 50 years, Intel has brought immense compute power to millions of people, transforming the way we live and work. We are now ushering in a new era of ‘Exascale Computing’ driven by the rise of artificial intelligence,” Raja M Koduri, Senior VP, Chief Architect and GM of Architecture, Graphics & Software, Intel Corporation, said in a statement.

The design and engineering centre was opened in the presence of Raja M Koduri, Senior VP, Chief Architect and GM of Architecture, Graphics and Software at Intel Corporation and Nivruti Rai, Country Head, Intel India and Vice President, Data Centre Group, Intel Corporation.

“Exascale for everyone is an exciting vision and it requires fundamental disruptions across the technology stack. Intel’s design and engineering centres will play a critical role in driving this mission and I look forward to the new centre in Hyderabad delivering breakthrough technologies to propel the company’s growth,” Koduri added.

The design centre will contribute to computing and communications technology innovations geared towards addressing critical challenges in today’s data-centric world and advance the firm’s engagements with the city’s technology ecosystem by fostering entrepreneurship and a research mindset.

Vivo V17 India Variant to Feature Hole-Punch Display, L-Shaped Quad Camera Setup: Report

Vivo is holding a press event in India next week where the company is expected to launch a new smartphone in its V-series, the Vivo V17. The company launched the global variant of the Vivo S1 Pro, rebranded as the Vivo V17, in Russia a week ago. However, the India model is once again expected to be slightly different from the Russia model. The company’s press invitation hints at a new smartphone with a hole-punch display, which is different from the Vivo V17 that launched in Russia.

Leaked images of the upcoming Vivo V17 seem to reveal some more details before the phone’s formal launch in India. According to 91Mobiles, which cites a company official for the phone’s images and specifications, the Vivo V17 will feature an L-shaped quad rear camera setup along with a hole-punch display. Both of these design details separate it from the Vivo V17 model launched in Russia, and the Vivo S1 Pro global variant launched in the Philippines late last month.

The Vivo V17 may be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 675 SoC, according to the report. The phone is expected to ship with a 4,500mAh battery and a 6.44-inch OLED display. The phone will support 18W fast charging.

Instead of the diamond-shaped camera module on the Vivo S1 Pro, the Vivo V17 is likely to feature an L-shaped quad-camera setup with a 48-megapixel primary camera sensor. The other cameras include an 8-megapixel secondary camera and two 2-megapixel camera sensors. On the front, the Vivo V17 is expected to feature a 32-megapixel camera sensor.

The smartphone will ship in two colour variants; Glacier Ice and Midnight Ocean. The phone will reportedly be made available with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage option. It’s still unclear whether this will be the only variant available in India. Vivo V17 is also expected to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor.

It’ll be interesting to see how Vivo prices the V17 in a crowded mid-range smartphone segment in India. Vivo is expected to launch the Vivo V17 in India on December 9.

The Realme sale also brings the Realme 3 Pro with an initial price of Rs. 9,999, down from Rs. 12,999. Similarly, the Realme 3 price has been slashed to as low as Rs. 7,999. The smartphone normally retails with a starting price of Rs. 8,999.

Realme also offers a Rs. 1,000 coupon on the purchase of the Realme 5 Pro, while customers buying the Realme 3 or Realme 3i are eligible to receive a coupon worth Rs. 500. These coupons can be used to purchase products from the Realme online store.
